Rest for Erik Lira

Coach Joel Huiqui explained that Erik Lira was given a break to calmly resolve his future while negotiations for his potential move to European football continue.

"The idea was to give Erik space, due to the negotiation. I think there is a back and forth, they haven't defined it well yet, I want to think about the budget, amounts and the rest. Today it was so he would be calm and without risk of something happening," said the Celeste coach.

Negotiations with Monaco

Huiqui detailed that the intention was to avoid any situation that could jeopardize the negotiations, so they deemed it prudent for Lira not to play against the Rojinegros.

"There could be accidents and, in that sense, we thought he needed this break to sort out his matter, which will be in the coming days," he added.

The talks between the clubs continue, mainly regarding figures and budget details. Cruz Azul keeps the possibility open that the midfielder could leave, although there is no definitive agreement with Monaco yet.

Future outlook

The strategist hopes the situation can be defined soon. If the transfer is finalized, Lira will embark on a new adventure in Europe; otherwise, he will have to report back to the Cementero squad next week.

"Let’s hope his matter is resolved soon, that he can leave well and happy, otherwise he will reintegrate next week here," he said.

"Erik is a club asset, I understand his desire to play at a higher level, but if he stays he will have to be fully committed with us," he concluded.
